Summary

The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake is the runaway TikTok must-read fantasy novel of the year。 If you loved Ninth House and A Deadly Education, you'll love this。

The world's best young magicians accept the opportunity of a lifetime。
Six are chosen。 Only five will walk away。

The Alexandrian Society is a secret society of magical academicians, the best in the world。 Their members are caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity。 And those who earn a place among their number will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams。 Each decade, the world's six most uniquely talented magicians are selected for initiation - and here are the chosen few 。 。 。

- Libby Rhodes and Nicolás Ferrer de Varona: inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds。
- Reina Mori: a naturalist who can speak the language of life itself。
- Parisa Kamali: a mind reader whose powers of seduction are unmatched。
- Tristan Caine: the son of a crime kingpin who can see the secrets of the universe。
- Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world。 He need only ask。

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they must spend one year together to qualify for initiation。 During this time, they will be permitted access to the Society's archives and judged on their contributions to arcane areas of knowledge。 Five, they are told, will be initiated。 One will be eliminated。 If they can prove themselves to be the best, they will survive。 Most of them。

。。。I just don't get it。 I don't understand how this book is so well loved。After finishing, I started reading reviews。 So many talk about how character driven this is (and yes, books with multiple POVs tend to be), but I feel like all we were given were caricatures。 While we were inside the MC's heads, I still don't think we truly understand them。 And with a book that has almost nonexistent plot, we need that character depth。The premise of this so enticing。 The execution was severely lacking。 Wor 。。。I just don't get it。 I don't understand how this book is so well loved。After finishing, I started reading reviews。 So many talk about how character driven this is (and yes, books with multiple POVs tend to be), but I feel like all we were given were caricatures。 While we were inside the MC's heads, I still don't think we truly understand them。 And with a book that has almost nonexistent plot, we need that character depth。The premise of this so enticing。 The execution was severely lacking。 World building is another touted part of many reviews, but my question is: what world building? We're not given any answers or explanations for how things actually work。 There is far too much scientific, philosophical, and/or theoretical discussions without providing any "answers" for how this world ticks。 It's so undefined and overcomplicated that it's utterly impossible to wade through。 I wanted to like this book and the only reason I didn't DNF it was because I assumed there had to be a huge pay off at the end。 I was sorely disappointed。 。。。more

There was one part in which Callum and Parisa had a ‘competition’ to show their magic to the other initiates, and from what I can reme I liked this book, but I also didn’t at the same time。 I don’t know if it’s because my expectations are high with this book or not, but I wasn’t satisfied。 Truth be told the only real ‘interesting’ thing in this book, was the ending。 The theme of The Atlas Six is competing to secure a spot in the Alexadrian Society, which I may say, no one competed。。 like at all? There was one part in which Callum and Parisa had a ‘competition’ to show their magic to the other initiates, and from what I can remember, that was it。 They did not regularly show off their powers to each other, most people were left in the dark with what the others could actually do。 To be quite frank, I was too。 Yes, I know what they are; physicist, naturalist, empath, illusionist, telepath but they rarely showed off their power。 I just could not grasp it。 For example, everyone talked about how great and powerful Libby was, (physicist) but the greatest thing she did was create a wormhole with Nico (other physicist) which allowed them to go from one room in the house to another。 She also made time stop for a brief moment with Tristian (illusionist)。 That’s it。 For nearly 400 pages I expected a lot more。 There was also lot of things that just did not make sense。。 in the slightest。 For example, Callum。 Callum is an empath and he can literally just talk to you and make you believe anything。 He made an illusionist who attacked the house (on the first night) kill herself by telling her how shitty her life was。 ANYWAYS, he could just make a wine glass appear in his hand。 Out of nothing! It made no sense。 He deals with emotions and he can just summon things to him??? Literally so weird。 And the author did not explain it at all! He was in midst of conversation with Tristan, and then he summons some wine glasses for them, both of them just disregarding what happened。 A lot of things in the book made no apparent sense and there were no explanations。 Honestly I was most let down by the idea of them having to actually secure their spots, in which they did not do anything。 They simply just lived in a house (which to me was more of a frat house) attended ‘lessons’ with Dalton, (in which they showed maybe 3/4) and just went on with their lives。 There were hardly any communications amongst the 6 of them, and with a book with all of their POVS, it was disappointing。 Parisha always found her way into whoever’s POV it was, and Reina was BARELY in the book。 The author clearly had favourites。 I was very disappointed with how Reina was portrayed。 She talked to Libby and Nico a couple times, but did not have ONE conversation with the other 3 unless all of them were in the same room。 I finished this book because I just wanted to have the satisfaction to see it through。 The idea of this book was exciting but honestly it was a let down。 Big time。 AND I CANT ENHANCE THIS ENOUGH, no one died????????? And Atlas had already chosen who he was going to eliminate even if the others did not ??? But the 6 were supposed to chose somebody for sacrifice which ultimately meant, killing them??? I honestly was really upset with this book。 It did not do its justice。 3 stars is generous。 。。。more

I ABSOLUTELY ADORED THIS。 THIS IS NOW ONE OF MY FAVOURITES AND I SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL。 This was perfection in its finest, and i have been planning this monologue of a review pretty much since i started it。 so the book starts with libby and nico, just chilling, classing academic rivals, we love to see it, and the whole thing ESCALATES SO FAST。 and it was great。 the pacing was definitely edge-of-your-seat。 the plot was exceptional。 some books you should read if you liked this: carry o I ABSOLUTELY ADORED THIS。 THIS IS NOW ONE OF MY FAVOURITES AND I SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL。 This was perfection in its finest, and i have been planning this monologue of a review pretty much since i started it。 so the book starts with libby and nico, just chilling, classing academic rivals, we love to see it, and the whole thing ESCALATES SO FAST。 and it was great。 the pacing was definitely edge-of-your-seat。 the plot was exceptional。 some books you should read if you liked this: carry on, the secret history, if we were villains, ninth house, the goldfinch。 it was probably the first book since the hunger games to successfully pull off the killing people off for some prize trope , which is beyond difficult so thats impressive。 now, for a book report on the characters in turn, may include minor spoilers: callum was easily my favourite character。 something that i always stand by is that mind control is the strongest possible power, and so callum is easily the most powerful of them all。 something odd is that he stated libby to be the strongest of them all, but that cant possibly be true, because he could have any power he wanted, including harnessing hers, with just a command。 power is something heavily disputed in this book。 is it knowledge? definitely not。 that was proven to be an addiction, a drug (more on this later)。 is it beauty, like parisa, ambition like reina, brute force like libby or nico? no, the definition of power is that it is control。 whoever has the most control has the most power。 control can be achieved in different ways (withholding/awarding survival necessities like the hunger games, manipulating greed like kaz brekker, etc。) but in this book, callum quite literally has the most control。 so, that raises the question, why (view spoiler)[ did they choose him to kill? this was possibly the only time parisa was ever truly mistaken。 libby was correct but incorrect。 its not the way you kill your mark, not just, its who you choose。 you dont choose the most or least beloved, the most or least powerful, the loner, the envied one, the one that gives you the creeps and the world would maybe be better without。 you pick the one least likely to fight back。 callum is the most likely to, not fight back, but to kill everyone in the process。 tristan was the obvious choice。 he wouldnt, couldn't have fought back。 everyone: plotting to murder him in a brutal betrayal: callum, an empath, sensing he may not be very liked: (hide spoiler)]。callum's internal monologues are beautiful and enlightened。 however, he's missing some understanding of himself。 the only reason he hasn't taken over the world, or at least the other members, is because he is inherently lazy。 he ascribes a lot of reasons to this: he is above humanity, their ambition is a waste of him。 and maybe he's right, but its also his privilege isnt it? parisa recognizes and manipulates her privilege。 callum, who isn't a visible minority, is rich, somewhat famous and of course powerful and smart, understands it, but doesn't recognize the impact it has on himself。 he basically pities himself too much。 he believes everything about himself is a result of his suffering, his burden, but its also something as simple as privilege。 callum is the shadow of parisa。 he's the second smartest, the second most beautiful, tristan's second or maybe third choice。 but she, who fears nothing, is scared of him。 and that makes their dynamic one of the most interesting in the book。 now of course, onto parisa。 a classic femme fatale, the smartest character and in my opinion has the most disconcerting power。 her monologues are also beyond important。 everything she has to say along the lines of beauty and sex is genius, and also happens to describe tristan to a t, which i'll elaborate on。 one thing is that all her criticisms on beauty, like its just cultural standards, its temporary and has no substance, while all completely accurate, is really easy for her to say isn't it?its dismissive, something parisa intensely is (visible in her initial dismissal of callum, which she eventually regrets)。 something that stood out to me was how she was certain she would not attempt to seduce reina because of her hidden power。 i would love to see a dynamic between them and elaboration on that sentiment since reina is not the most powerful。 ok next is tristan。 ah tristan。 dear, sweet, fatherless behaviour tristan。 he is one of the most human of them all。 he echoes all of parisa's scathing thoughts on men。 he's feeling sad? he hooks up。 why? for that brief, no-strings-attached intimacy and comfort。 however, the problem is that he is literally made of strings。 he didn't make it out of any hook-up without residual feelings and a sense of commitment。 only once was this reciprocated, however, and that was frankly a little disastrous。 callum's little confrontation at the end, basically just upheaving tristan's daddy issues? funny as hell。 now, reina。 aroace queen i believe。 not really much to say, but i can't wait to see her realize more of her potential。 now, nico。 reminds me of baz, but like happier。 i quite like him, and his relationship with libby。 gives very much bas and simon。 wht can i sya, i love a good academic rivals ot lovers。 however, i also cannot wait to see more of him and gideon。 libby! sweet, so human。 dumb but smart, i love。 atlas。 he's a cautionary tale, isnt' he。 he never really got over the drug use of his youth, he just found a new addiction: knowledge。 and he fell into that trap hard。 ok that's pretty much it, it was essentially perfect, olivie blake is a genuine, donna tartt-esque genius and i cannot wait to see where she goes!! 。。。more

Look if I’m being honest as soon as I read the blurb, part of me just knew I would love this book so you can imagine my disappointment when I lowkey hated it? Definitely interesting with great characters and a fun plot but it took itself way too seriously and it was hard to really understand what was happening with the magic systems。 Also the weird “twist” at the end was totally unearned cause that could’ve been more developed throughout the novel instead of just being thrown in at the end。 I am interested in what happens though and will read the 2nd book
